The development of composite column technology has been a focal point in the work of the Studiengesellschaft in recent years. The main results, which relate to concrete-filled hollow sections as well as pipes and concrete-filled open sections, have already been reflected in a corresponding draft standard. However, cold-formed profiles, especially those with a C-shaped cross-section, are also well suited to the production of composite sets, as they - are easy to manufacture; - have a favourable ratio of steel content to total cross-section; - have shown good results in the fire tests carried out to date. Concreted C-sections have not yet found their way into practice, which is probably due in particular to the lack of precise calculation and design information. The Studiengesellschaft hopes to have made a contribution to closing these gaps with the present work. STUDIENGESELLSCHAFT FÜR ANWENDUNGSTECHNIK VON EISEN UND STAHL e.V.

P 79 Fort. - Investigation into reducing the susceptibility to defects in drawn arc stud welding Stud welding is used successfully in a wide variety of industrial production areas. In order to increase component reliability, ever increasing demands are also being placed on welded joints in terms of quality and uniformity. These requirements can only be met if the effects of the influencing variables are researched and the devices for welding, measuring and control are improved or newly developed on the basis of this knowledge. In order to solve these tasks, the present research work was carried out on behalf of the Studiengesellschaft für Anwendungstechnik von Eisen und Stahl e.V. and with financial support from the Federal Minister for Research and Technology (BMFT), Bonn, at the Schweißtechnischen Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt, Munich, under the direction of Dr.-Ing. It is a continuation of the topic dealt with in the first part of research project 79. In the first project, a computer-controlled stud welding system with precise and reproducible lifting and plunging movements was developed. The error rate was significantly reduced. The aim of the present study was to complete the knowledge gained and to transfer it into practice. The results are of particular practical value as a basis for the development of a new stud welding gun. Further information on the same subject area can be found in the research work already completed by the Studiengesellschaft P 26 "Investigations into the applicability of stud welding for weather-resistant and high-strength structural steels" and P 80 "Investigations into the applicability of drawn arc stud welding for welding galvanised steel sheets". P 93 - Residual stresses of welded hollow section joints and their influence on the fatigue and endurance strength As part of the Berntihungen project to investigate the properties of hollow section structures at an international level, research programmes on the static and dynamic behaviour of such components were carried out in several countries (including the UK and France). The aim of these research activities was the development of design and construction recommendations and the creation of regulations for the design of such structures. In the Federal Republic of Germany, a draft for DIN 18 808 "Steel structures, structures made of hollow sections under predominantly static loading" was completed in this context in the version dated 20 November 1980; this draft has since been approved by the standards committee for "white printing". This is the first time that a regulation on this sub-area of construction technology is available for the German sector. It is to be expected that the Netherlands, Great Britain and France will soon follow suit, especially as efforts are currently underway to harmonise the rules applicable to the use of hollow section structures at European level. As a result of further fatigue tests on hollow section structures, the draft of Eurocode 3 ("Fatigue") was presented, also by the author of this report, which provides users with the latest knowledge in this field. The results of the research programme, which are presented in this report, have been incorporated into the European code. STUDIENGESELLSCHAFT FÜR ANWENDUNGSTECHNIK VON EISEN UND STAHL e.V. P 96 - Investigations into the joining of high-strength deep-drawn sheets Joining is one of the main manufacturing processes used in the production of components of all kinds. A subgroup is referred to as 'material joining', which includes the manufacturing processes of welding, soldering and bonding - especially for metallic joints. Welding and soldering have long been regarded as tried and tested material combinations for which there is sufficient experience; in addition, the industry has a sufficient number of practice-orientated specialist engineers who constantly ensure that reliable knowledge and new experiences are incorporated into the manufacturing processes. In principle, the same conditions apply to bonding as to welding. However, in order to open up a broader field of application for the 'joining by bonding' manufacturing process, it is necessary to develop in-depth principles for design and production. This is where the research project of the Studiengesellschaft für Anwendungstechnik von Eisen und Stahl comes in; this report examines the processability of high-strength steel sheets by spot welding and seam bonding as well as the strength behaviour of joints produced by spot welding, adhesive bonding, spot-weld adhesive bonding and seam bonding. The test results are compared with the results of corresponding tests with conventional deep-drawn sheets. Metallographic investigations, the determination of welding parameter ranges and bending tests provide information on the processability of high-strength steel sheets by spot welding and seam bonding. The strength behaviour of spot-welded, bonded, spot-welded-bonded and seam-bonded joints is determined under dynamic, oscillating and impact loads. The ageing resistance of the bonded joints, taking into account various adhesive systems, is determined under damaging ageing media (temperature, water, salt water). The results obtained provide a relatively clear picture of the processability of high-strength steel sheets from a welding and folding point of view and provide numerous insights into the strength behaviour of spot-welded, bonded, spot-welded-bonded and seam-bonded joints.
