Stud welding is a very economical joining process that has already found a permanent area of application in many branches of industry. As the demands on the long-term operational behaviour and safety of the components are constantly increasing, the quality and reproducibility of the welded joints are inevitably subject to higher requirements. Due to the large number of influencing variables involved in stud welding, optimising and keeping the parameters constant is a necessary but not easy task. In order to solve these problems, the present research work was carried out at the Schweißtechnische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt, Munich, under the direction of Dr W.
Welz, on behalf of the Studiengesellschaft für Anwendungstechnik von Eisen und Stahl e.V. and with financial support from the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Industrieller Forschungsvereinigungen e.V. (AIF), Cologne. The research results are practice-orientated, so that a direct application is possible. Optimised welding data are given, whereby the latest current sources, a computer-controlled welding device, toroidal coils for influencing the blowing effect and high-speed film recordings were used to determine the results. The modern investigation methods show the possibilities that will represent the state of the art in stud welding in the future. Further information on the same complex of topics can be found in the research work already completed by the Studiengesellschaft für Anwendungstechnik von Eisen und Stahl e.V. P 44 - Steel tracks for the EMS short stator and long stator version The Federal Republic of Germany is a leader in the development of electromagnetic monorail systems. Research funding for electromagnetic monorail systems is provided by the Federal Ministry of Research and Technology. The tracks for electromagnetic suspension railways account for the largest share of the investment costs in the event of realisation; therefore, particular importance is attached to the development of the tracks. The Studiengesellschaft für Anwendungstechnik von Eisen und Stahl e.V. (Study Association for Application Technology of Iron and Steel) has sponsored the present research work in order to develop favourable track systems for electromagnetic suspension railways in steel construction, taking into account all the possibilities of modern steel construction. As a result of this research work, all the necessary track developments in steel construction could be brought to a successful conclusion in addition to the work sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Research and Technology. The research work also provides a summarised overview of the status of track development at the end of 1977. It can be a valuable aid for study purposes and further developments. Elements of the results of these investigations were also used in the first application-oriented test track made of steel at the International Transport Exhibition in Hamburg in 1979. It is to be expected that the possible solutions for rail crossings shown in this research work will be of interest for future applications, especially for bridges with large spans. The research work was carried out on behalf of the Studiengesellschaft für Anwendungstechnik von Eisen und Stahl e.V. by the companies Thyssen-Klönne MAN Gustavsburg plant Mannesmannröhren-Werke in a joint research project. P 26 - Investigations into the applicability of stud welding for weather-resistant and high-strength structural steels Stud welding has proven to be an economical joining method in many branches of industry and especially in the construction industry. In structural steelwork and bridge construction, stud welding is used in composite structures to fasten headed stud dowels, which are used to absorb the shear forces between steel and concrete. Up to now, mainly the structural steels St 37 and St 52 have been used. The demands of steel construction for materials with improved corrosion and increased strength properties have led to the development of weather-resistant and higher-strength fine-grain structural steels. These steels make it possible to fully utilise the advantages of lightweight construction - weight saving and wall thickness reduction - if the problems of joining technology can be solved. As there was insufficient experience of stud welding of weather-resistant and high-strength fine-grain structural steels, the present research work was carried out by Prof. Dr.-Ing. F. Eichhorn, Institute for Welding Manufacturing Processes (ISF) at the TH Aachen and Dipl.-Ing. H.W. Langenbahn, also ISF, on behalf of the Studiengesellschaft für Anwendungstechnik von Eisen und Stahl e.V. and with financial support from the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Industrieller Forschungsvereinigungen (AIF) e.V., Cologne. The tests proved that with careful welding preparation and selection of suitable welding parameters - despite high hardness in the heat-affected zone of the stud weld - no failure of the welded joints occurred under static load. The positive results encourage further work in this area in order to provide comprehensive proof of the usability of stud welding for such steel materials in the construction industry. In this context, reference should be made to the new projects P 79 "Investigations into reducing the susceptibility to defects in drawn arc stud welding" and P 80 "Investigations into the applicability of drawn arc stud welding in the welding of galvanised steel sheets", which were commissioned by the Studiengesellschaft from the SLV Munich and the TH Aachen and are currently being carried out.
