The noise reduction of machines and systems as a "soft" product requirement is increasingly becoming an unavoidable obligation for the designer due to customer demands and legal requirements. Structures made of thin sheet metal are particularly critical elements in the sound chain, as they are usually used over large areas as panelling, design elements or even load-bearing parts and are therefore good sound emitters. For design reasons, they are often connected to the structure that generates structure-borne noise and also form the interface to the outside noise-sensitive environment. This work therefore investigates the possibilities for reducing structure-borne noise by damping the joints in assemblies connected to thin sheet metal structures.

The joints are ideally suited for this because they are necessary for the design anyway and do not entail any additional expense. It is therefore obvious to select suitable joining processes and adjust their technological parameters in the direction of optimising damping. A measurement method suitable for determining damping on thin sheet samples was developed, which can be easily adapted and used to evaluate new joining techniques. Extensive investigations and parameter studies were carried out to quantify the damping capacity of various joining processes. The influence of overlap, number of joints, prestressing and sound frequency as well as some special pre-treatments was determined, and a frequency-dependent ranking was used to provide the designer with a practical selection aid. The experimental investigations allowed a good/bad selection for the specific application in practice. The causes of the damping phenomena were uncovered with the help of pressure measurements, deformation measurements, joint gap measurements and others. A key finding is the fact that the joining process itself does not cause the actual damping effect, especially in the case of stiff joints. Much more decisive is the surrounding flange area and the need for the manufacturing process to to apply an appropriate contact force between the sheets. To give the reader from the field a quick introduction, the methods used for noise reduction are briefly described in the main section, and it is shown which targets are achieved with them. the targets that could be achieved. The results are listed as the main focus of this main section. The scientifically interested reader will find detailed descriptions of the test set-ups, measurement methods, evaluation procedures and theories in the appendix.
