Evaluation of inclusions in stainless steels on the basis of inclusion areas Part 3: Method E Publication: August 2017 This part of the specification describes the scope of testing and the evaluation according to method E (extreme value analysis). This method is especially suited for a statistical risk assessment concerning the existence of large inclusions. Sampling, specimen preparation, and the test report are defined in SEP 1571-1.

Evaluation of inclusions in stainless steels on the basis of inclusion areas Part 2: Methods and M Publication: August 2017 This part of the specification describes the scope of testing and the evaluation according to methods M (maximum inclusion value) and K (mean inclusion value). These methods are especially suited for routine quality level inspections. Sampling, specimen preparation, and the test report are defined in SEP 1571-1.

Evaluation of inclusions in stainless steels on the basis of inclusion areas Part 1: Fundamentals Publication: August 2017 This test specification describes the examination of non-metallic inclusions in the form of sulfides and oxides in the polished section of special steels. The test can be performed manually or by means of image analysis systems. Between the results determined manually and by image analysis no greater difference should arise than between two different examiners from different laboratories. To achieve this, the classifications follow a mathematical scheme. Whether the steel is evaluated manually or by image analysis, the rules for combining and distinguishing of inclusions should leave no room for interpretation. This SEP is valid for deformed long products as shown in figure 8 to figure 14. An application for flat products in the form of sheets and strips and forgings with no straight grain orientation has to be agreed separately between the customer and the supplier. In this case the amount of testing, sampling and evaluation require a separate agreement. This test specification is not suitable for rating sulfide inclusions in steel grades with controlled sulfur content of more than 0.05 % by weight (such as free-cutting steels). The setting of acceptance limits is not part of this test specification.
