The guidelines for steel composite beams /7/ regulate the design and execution of structural components consisting of steel beams and concrete chords that are connected to each other in shear by means of fasteners. The two materials concrete and steel are used in a stress-orientated manner: the concrete in the compression zone and the steel girder in the tension zone. The use of composite structures for long-span and highly stressed ceilings in building and industrial construction offers the user economic advantages. Among other things, there is the simple option of attaching additional devices or equipment to the supporting structure by welding, bolting, etc. In the case of steel composite beams, the steel cross-section of the tension chord is determined in accordance with /6.7/ by the calculated limit load capacity verification under normal temperature.
The fact that the tension chord is directly exposed to fire often proves unfavourable for achieving high fire resistance times. One way of improving the load-bearing behaviour of composite steel girders under fire exposure while retaining the structural advantages of the ''bare steel bottom chord'' at normal temperature is to concrete the chambers of the steel girder profile - usually commercially available I-sections; if necessary, additional web reinforcements are added and/or reinforcing steel inserts are placed in the concreted chambers (Figure 1.1). In the past, these design measures have been used repeatedly and successfully to extend the fire resistance period. To date, there has been no systematic investigation into how the heating behaviour of composite steel beams is changed by the above-mentioned design measures or which are the decisive influencing parameters for decisively improving the load-bearing behaviour of composite steel beams under the influence of fire. In the present research project, these questions are to be answered by theoretical and computational studies as well as by experimental investigations. To this end, heating tests will be carried out on selected, practical steel composite beam cross-sections, the results of which will be used to validate the theoretical and computational investigations. Finally, decision-making and design aids are developed for practical use, which enable a favourable fire protection design of steel composite beams.

P 86 2.10 - Fire behaviour and dimensioning of connections to extend the fire resistance period of composite structures As part of the major fire protection research programme "Fire behaviour of steel and steel composite structures", a great deal of attention is paid to the investigation of composite components such as columns, beams, floors and grids. They were necessary because the composite construction method, which has been placed on a new footing in recent years - promoted by numerous projects of the Studiengesellschaft, among others - has met with a great response in the construction industry. Numerous applications in industrial and administrative buildings, hospitals, etc. demonstrate this. Some of these projects have to fulfil fire protection requirements. However, since only individual tests with composite components were available, which also only took into account singular designs, it was necessary to carry out such investigations with validity for the various types of construction. It soon became apparent that it was also necessary to investigate the fire behaviour of standard connections of composite components in order to finally classify them into a fire resistance class. This task was carried out as sub-project 2.lo "Fire behaviour of transom connections on composite columns made of rolled sections set in concrete and hollow sections set in concrete". Already during the implementation, but even more so during the final elaboration, it became apparent that due to the special features of the composite construction method, the question could be formulated more generally and extended to the load-bearing behaviour of the composite beam system with the aim of mode of action and design to include measures to extend the fire resistance period. The results of these complex investigations are presented to the professional world in this report. They show practitioners several ways to design the fire protection of beams and connections. To take account of this extension, the more ambitious title "Fire behaviour and design of connections to extend the fire resistance period of composite structures" was chosen. It is to the authors' credit that this report provides the basic principles of fire protection assessment and dimensioning for direct application, all the more so because these principles not only apply to individual cases, but can also be adopted in the standards (DIN 4lo2). All steps of the investigations were accompanied by a group of advisors consisting of competent practitioners with experience in the field of joints between steel and solid construction. This ensured close practical relevance. We would therefore like to express our gratitude to these gentlemen working on a voluntary basis. P 86 2.2 - Fire behaviour of composite columns with consideration of the different column/beam connections The design and construction of composite columns - structural steel, concrete and reinforcing steel are rigidly bonded - at room temperature conditions has been regulated by DIN 18 806 Part 1 /25/. These columns are not included in DIN 4102 Part 4 /22/ - a catalogue of components divided into fire resistance classes - due to a lack of test experience. For this reason, a research project /1/ was carried out between 1978 and 1980 on behalf of the Studiengesellschaft für Anwendungstechnik von Eisen und Stahl e.V., Düsseldorf, with financial support from the European Coal and Steel Community, Brussels, by the Institute for Building Materials, Solid Construction and Fire Protection at the Technical University of Braunschweig, in which the fire behaviour of composite columns was investigated. These tests were carried out with precisely defined static support conditions - hinged or clamped. The exact definition of the support conditions is essential for a theoretical interpretation of the tests. In a fire protection assessment, however, their selection should also fulfil the conditions that exist in practice. This research report presents the results of tests on steel composite columns that were tested under practical storage conditions. A test set-up was developed that made it possible to realistically simulate the load-bearing and deformation behaviour of columns exposed to fire in building construction. The constraint stress resulting from the displacement of large floor systems under fire exposure could be taken into account. This research project was financially supported by the Studiengesellschaft für Anwendungstechnik von Eisen und Stahl e.V., Düsseldorf, and the Federal Ministry of Research and Technology, Bonn. P 86 2.3 Volume 1 - Theory, calculation principles and examples At the instigation of the Studiengemeinschaft für Anwendungstechnik von Eisen und Stahl e.V., Düsseldorf, a research project on the mathematical investigation of composite columns under fire exposure was funded in the years 1980-1984. The aim of the research project was to produce load tables for which the calculation principles derived from experimental investigations were to be used. The following cross-sections were analysed: - Composite cross-sections with rolled sections embedded in concrete - Composite cross-sections with hollow sections encased in concrete The calculation results are presented in the form of tables and diagrams. The entire scope of the research project is divided into three report volumes in order to provide the user with clear and simple handling of the calculation values. - VOLUME 1 Theory, calculation principles and examples This volume contains the theory and calculation principles for determining the load-bearing capacity of composite columns made of steel and concrete under the influence of fire. Detailed information and examples of the entire calculation scope of the research project are provided. - VOLUME 2 Load tables and application examples This volume contains the calculated loads in the form of tables. The use of the tables is explained using examples. - VOLUME 3 Load charts and application examples. This volume contains the calculated load capacities in the form of diagrams. The use of the diagrams is explained using examples. The research project was financially supported by the following institutions: - Studiengesellschaft für Anwendungstechnik für Eisen und Stahl e.V., Düsseldorf. Project P 86 , sub-project 2.3 - Federal Ministry of Research and Technology, Bonn. Project BAU 6004 The investigations were carried out at the Institute for Building Materials, Concrete Construction and Fire Protection (IBMB) at the TU Braunschweig. The basic principles for calculating fire-stressed components developed in the special research area 148 "Fire behaviour of building materials and components" at the Technical University of Braunschweig were used for this project.
