The expected new version of the regulation on components subjected to compressive stress (DIN 18 800, Part 2: formerly DIN 4114) is based on the theoretical concept of the general case of so-called "lateral-torsional buckling". Sufficient stability can be verified using either the ultimate load theory, the yield hinge theory or the elasticity theory. The most accurate, but also the most complex, method is the ultimate load method. The ultimate loads of steels subjected to compression are influenced by geometric and structural imperfections. Geometric imperfections are eccentricities of the load or pre-deformations of the bar axes.
Structural imperfections are caused by the manufacturing process of the beams. These include the residual stresses that result from the welding, rolling or bending process in steel beams. The background of this research task is to investigate the influence of residual stresses on the load-bearing behaviour of components. In the case of cross-sections subject to compressive stresses, for example, parts subject to residual compressive stresses can lead to premature failure because the deformations may increase more disproportionately than is the case with cross-sections free of residual stresses. The yielding process would be initiated earlier than would normally be the case. The maximum load to be borne would then be less than that which would have been borne without residual stresses. The ratio of the maximum residual compressive stress to the yield strength is of particular importance. For high-strength steels, this ratio is generally more favourable than for the usual structural steels St 37 and St 52. On the other hand, the influence of pre-deformations on the play of forces must be reassessed here for the reasons mentioned. As the investigations show, the verification rules for normal steels specified in DIN 18 800, Part 2 can also be used without restriction for the high-strength steels investigated here. P 86 2.2 - Fire behaviour of composite columns with consideration of the different column/beam connections The design and construction of composite columns - structural steel, concrete and reinforcing steel are rigidly bonded - at room temperature conditions has been regulated by DIN 18 806 Part 1 /25/. These columns are not included in DIN 4102 Part 4 /22/ - a catalogue of components divided into fire resistance classes - due to a lack of test experience. For this reason, a research project /1/ was carried out between 1978 and 1980 on behalf of the Studiengesellschaft für Anwendungstechnik von Eisen und Stahl e.V., Düsseldorf, with financial support from the European Coal and Steel Community, Brussels, by the Institute for Building Materials, Solid Construction and Fire Protection at the Technical University of Braunschweig, in which the fire behaviour of composite columns was investigated. These tests were carried out with precisely defined static support conditions - hinged or clamped. The exact definition of the support conditions is essential for a theoretical interpretation of the tests. In a fire protection assessment, however, their selection should also fulfil the conditions that exist in practice. This research report presents the results of tests on steel composite columns that were tested under practical storage conditions. A test set-up was developed that made it possible to realistically simulate the load-bearing and deformation behaviour of columns exposed to fire in building construction. The constraint stress resulting from the displacement of large floor systems under fire exposure could be taken into account. This research project was financially supported by the Studiengesellschaft für Anwendungstechnik von Eisen und Stahl e.V., Düsseldorf, and the Federal Ministry of Research and Technology, Bonn. P 08.1 - Load-bearing behaviour of steel columns in combination with concrete (hollow sections) This paper contains the calculation and design of concrete-lined hollow section columns made of structural steel under compression and uniaxial bending. After a brief introduction, Section 2 summarises international research work in this field. In Section 3, a calculation programme is developed as an accurate numerical method. Section 4 contains interaction relations for the ultimate limit state for the whole range between centric compression and pure bending. Many results obtained with the described calculation programme and the interaction curves are compared with each other and with available test results; very good agreement can almost always be observed.
