The development project presented below was carried out with the aim of economically optimising room trusses with the aid of parameter studies. The specified parameters include ground plan dimensions; open parameters are the supporting structure, grid dimension and construction height. The results of the work should enable the user to select the economically optimised space frame for the intended application without great effort. The user is given the opportunity not only to determine the optimum weight of the structure directly from a few influencing variables, but above all to determine the most cost-effective solution with just a few simple calculation steps.
The individual cost structure of the company is taken into account. Furthermore, the work makes it possible to compare construction systems for specific purposes or to consider the development of new cost-efficient construction systems. Contrary to the original intention to include parameter studies for truss girders in the investigations, this was dispensed with in the further course of the research work. The reasons for this include the fact that the problem of lateral stabilisation, in contrast to spatial trusses, would have required an arbitrary selection from the multitude of practical possibilities; in contrast, additional parameter studies on spatial trusses, such as those carried out with identical members in the upper chord, lower chord and diagonals, appeared to be more meaningful. The diagrams in the research report represent the final stage of the investigation and at the same time the evaluation of the results. The present work is useful for architects, planners, contractors and future manufacturers of spatial truss constructions. STUDIENGESELLSCHAFT FÜR ANWENDUNGSTECHNIK VON EISEN UND STAHL e.V.

P 08.1 - Load-bearing behaviour of steel columns in combination with concrete (hollow sections) This paper contains the calculation and design of concrete-lined hollow section columns made of structural steel under compression and uniaxial bending. After a brief introduction, Section 2 summarises international research work in this field. In Section 3, a calculation programme is developed as an accurate numerical method. Section 4 contains interaction relations for the ultimate limit state for the whole range between centric compression and pure bending. Many results obtained with the described calculation programme and the interaction curves are compared with each other and with available test results; very good agreement can almost always be observed. P 08.2 - Load-bearing behaviour of steel columns in combination with concrete (open profiles) This paper contains the calculation and design of steel columns in concrete under compression and uniaxial bending. Some comments and design suggestions are also made for biaxial bending. Section 2 summarises international research work. Section 3 explains a calculation programme that is used for precise numerical calculation. Section 4 contains interaction relations and design proposals based on the European buckling stress curves. The proposed design procedure is explained using a number of examples. Numerous ultimate loads determined in accordance with Sections 3 and 4 are compared with foreign test results. A generally good agreement can be established Publication: 1976 Authors: J. Stanke
