Enamellings are firmly adherent inorganic coatings which have a high corrosion resistance, hardness and resulting wear resistance, as well as a good temperature resistance, and are therefore widely used in industry. Due to the low ductility of the coatings, enamelling is performed at the end of the process chain, meaning that oftentimes very bulky parts must be coated. More convenient would be the enamelling of flat parts, which, however, required suitable joining technology. It is known from a patent that in general enamelled steel sheets can be joined using laser beam welding. This project aimed at examining laser beam welding processes to join directlyenamelled 1 mm ED3 sheet steel used in the industry of large electric appliances, as well as of 3.5 and 5 mm S235JR sheets with double-coat enamellings used for boilers.
The investigations were done with regard to process liability and joining quality. Defects resulting from the enamelling are mainly cracks and chipped enamel above the weld seam, which result from a too low adherence. This led to investigations on process integrated laser beam pre and post heating during welding to lower the temperature gradients. Weld seams with sufficient corrosion resistance can be generated, depending on the amount of remaining adhesive substances, as well as on the ductility of the resolidified enamel above the weld seam.
