The subject of this feasibility study is the development of a steel roof truss while retaining proven design concepts for roof trusses and roof cladding. The basic idea was to replace the traditional wooden rafters with steel-wood rafters when using steel. It was proven that the steel-wood rafter is statically and physically more favourable than a traditional wooden rafter when constructed accordingly. The steel-wood construction method is characterised by a high degree of flexibility, so that complicated geometric roof shapes, e.g. dormers, sloping offsets can also be easily solved in combination with wood. It also provides incentives for further economic developments by craftsmen and manufacturers.
Steel-timber composite rafters are also significantly lighter than traditional timber rafters and can therefore be installed without a crane. The cost of lifting equipment is therefore eliminated for this trade. With series prefabrication in the factory (e.g. prior notching of profiles for connections, prefabrication of the composite rafters by screwing the wooden battens onto the steel beams in the factory), the overall assembly is faster and the overall costs can be further reduced. The use of steel-timber composite rafters does not lead to the displacement of a trade, but rather offers the carpenter an alternative to the traditional timber roof construction method without the need for upstream or downstream trades to change. It was quickly accepted by the tradesmen and integrated smoothly into the construction process. The aim of the study, to demonstrate the economic and technically advantageous use of steel in traditional roof trusses, was achieved. STUDIENGESELLSCHAFT STAHLANWENDUNG e.V.
