In the completed research project, a process was developed to disperse or alloy different paste-bound materials in strip steel. The aim of the project was to develop wear-resistant coatings that meet the tribologically demanding requirements of the cutting blade industry. At the beginning of the project, the handling technology required for paste processing was developed. This includes the equipment for transporting, drying and applying the pastes. The drying process in particular required increased development effort and was adapted to the current state of knowledge in the course of the trials. The selection of a suitable beam source led to the conclusion that a fibre-guided Nd:YAG laser offers the greatest possible process efficiency and also allows the user a high degree of flexibility for future applications.
In order to open up the widest possible field of application for industry, the investigations were extended to include both hard material-based and metal-based paste systems. The pastes were developed in consultation with the project partner Innobraze GmbH in Esslingen and their composition was varied according to the tests. The evaluation of the tests in co-operation with the cutting blade manufacturer Lutz KG in Solingen has shown that alloy systems are more suitable than hard material-based coatings. The wear resistance is higher and therefore the service life of the end product also increases. An optimum result could not be achieved. The deficits of the surface layers produced lay particularly in their reproducibility and the inhomogeneous distribution of the filler material within the layers produced. This is particularly important when it comes to realising production. For process-related and economic reasons, coating lengths of several hundred metres of the same component quality must be achieved. This could not be achieved with the previous tests, so that an industrial implementation does not appear to be feasible at the present time. There is still a need for more research, particularly in the variation of the paste composition and its properties. In addition, the handling technology must be further improved. The complex interaction of all components involved in the process could not yet be conclusively analysed within the scope of this project. STUDIENGESELLSCHAFT STAHLANWENDUNG e. V.
