Surface-treated sheet steel is increasingly being used for components subject to corrosive stresses in various branches of industry. As a result, the joining of such sheet metal is becoming increasingly important. During this processing step, damage to the corrosion-inhibiting coating and effects on the load-bearing behaviour of joined components subjected to vibrations must be expected. Against this background, the aim of the research project was to develop a suitable time-lapse test for simulating the simultaneous mechanical and corrosive long-term loads that occur in reality. The tests were carried out on H-shaped sample components joined by spot welding, punch riveting, clinching, clinch bonding or spot welding adhesive bonding.
Some of the test specimens were subjected to oscillating loads and corrosive conditions over a longer period of time. The test results show that there is and can be no universal time-lapse test for this type of stress. The joining part materials, coatings and pairings as well as the joining process and the load must always be considered in a practical manner and in accordance with the conditions on site. Depending on the type of joining technology, different mechanisms are responsible for the behaviour of the joints under these conditions. Under certain circumstances, a low test frequency in the climate can be replaced by a longer exposure time and higher test frequencies. In certain cases, the duration is of decisive importance for the course of various damage mechanisms and can therefore not be reduced below a critical level. The investigations have shown that the test selected for testing the fatigue strength of joints provides useful results and indications for avoiding unacceptable damage when practical conditions are set. The automotive industry and manufacturers of household appliances in particular, but also the construction industry, can benefit from these results. STUDIENGESELLSCHAFT STAHLANWENDUNG e.V.
